‘Maestro’ Trailer Sparks Backlash

On Tuesday, Netflix released the first trailer for Maestro, its upcoming Leonard Bernstein drama directed, co-written by, and starring Bradley Cooper. The actor’s appearance in the first glimpse of footage quickly reignited a topic of conversation that arose back in May 2022 when the first stills of the movie were released, due to Cooper’s facial prosthetics, which some alleged were unnecessary and constituted a troubling example of “Jewface.”

The movie is centered around the iconic composer and his relationship with Felicia Montealegre (played by Carey Mulligan), whom he married in 1951. Maestro, which also counts Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese among its producers, is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival which begins at the end of this month. It will be released in select theaters on Nov. 22 and on Netflix on Dec. 20.

On Wednesday, Bernstein’s children Jamie, Alexander, and Nina Bernstein posted a statement to his official Twitte…

Baldur’s Gate 3’s most beloved voice is joining Fallout 4’s most ambitious mod as Astarion actor Neil Newbon bares his fangs on the streets of London-

Fallout 4’s mega-ambitious, DLC-sized, and indiscriminately British expansion mod Fallout: London is rapidly approaching its official release date of April 23, and to mark the occasion its creators have released its final (of many) progress videos, showcasing the mod’s state ahead of its release and revealing a few appetite-whetting tidbits to pique your interest. First and foremost? Those mad lads have gotten Neil Newbon—Baldur’s Gate 3’s Astarion—to lend his voice to the project.

We don’t get to hear Newbon’s character speak, but we do get a brief shot of him getting up to something presumably ASBO-worthy in London’s post-apocalyptic boroughs. I’m pretty certain every party member from BG3 has their own cult following, but I think you could call Newbon’s seductive, foppish Astarion a breakout character among breakout characters. Getting the award-winning actor on board is quite a coup for a mod project, and I’m very curious to see just how much of Newbon ends up …

Call of Duty dips into ‘pay-to-win’ with $12 bundle that gives you actual gameplay advantages-

Call of Duty is treading where few live service games dare go. As part of this week’s launch of Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 Season 3, a new cosmetic bundle that grants significant gameplay advantages in DMZ mode has appeared, and more are coming. Players are declaring this a move toward Warzone 2 becoming “pay-to-win,” and they’re not wrong.

The first bundle to include what Activision’s calling a “DMZ boost” is the $12 EOD Specialist bundle for Fender. At a glance the bundle is just a forgettable operator skin with a “pro-tuned” LMG blueprint, but equip them in Warzone’s extraction mode, DMZ, and they become a lot more valuable—players with the EOD operator skin are automatically given a free medium backpack, and the LMG comes with a special 15-minute insured cooldown after dying (much shorter than a free gun’s 2-hour penalty).

What does this mean in practice? While a normal operator typically starts a DMZ match with naked contraband guns and little storage spac…

Check out this open world martial arts tactical RPG with dozens of story paths-

After eight months in Early Access, Chinese martial arts RPG Hero’s Adventure: Road to Passion will release on November 16 with a full English translation. The tactical marital arts combat, combined with open world gameplay, make this an interesting and unique one for people who’re fans of the genre or who really love the world of wuxia battles.

It’s the zero to hero story of your protagonist, a guy who starts out the game getting their butt whooped by chickens and can only go up from there. It’s the kind of old school structure of a story-driven yet open world game—like Morrowind—that I love to see, letting you sequence break and figure out how to proceed on your own. There are a ton of unique techniques to learn and sects to join, as well as characters to recruit, leaving you with a ton of combinations.

What’s best about the game, really, is that you can have varied relationships with everyone you meet. That’s a genre staple for wuxia or jianghu “mart…

Dredge, the vibes-heavy indie hit about fishing on a sea of otherworldly horrors, is being made into a movie-

Some videogames are obvious candidates for big-screen translations, and some are not. The fishing-horror game Dredge, I think, falls into the latter category, but guess what? A Variety report says a movie based on Dredge is now in the works.

It’s not that Dredge isn’t a good game. It is in fact very good. We gave it our “Best Setting” award for 2023: Features producer Mollie Taylor said it “has the most immaculate vibes of any game” she’d played that year. “By day it’s a relaxing and serene fishing game, but once the sun sets it turns into an unsettling realisation of how isolated your tiny boat is on those big dark waters. Dredge plays to that polarity wonderfully, crafting a delightfully spooky world that has my usual horror-averse self desperate to dig deeper into its mysteries.”

The issue is that vibes are what it’s all about: You go fishing and, if you’re not careful, you wind up in a “brilliantly unnerving” world of Lovecraft-flavored unpleasantness. That could ser…

Final Fantasy 14 won’t let you blast past its story for free anytime soon because Yoshi-P worried ‘the value of the game itself will be diminished’-

Director and producer Naoki Yoshida has squashed the possibility of introducing a new alternative starting point in Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail.

The MMO is getting to be a mighty long game. With one base game, four expansions and a fifth one on the way, I don’t think it’s too out there to reckon that you’d be spending a good 300 – 400 hours ploughing through the story alone.

That can be a big roadblock for would-be Warriors of Light and honestly, if I hadn’t been playing for almost a decade I don’t necessarily know if I’d have the willpower to get through it all. Of course, there is the option to cough up a few bucks for a story skip, but with Dawntrail marking the beginning of a new narrative arc, I was hoping that there’d be an option in-game for an alternative jumping in point.

The possibility of a skip to allow people to join the story during the post-Endwalker patches was discussed last year, so in a recent interview I did with Yoshida, I thought I would…

DLC-sized Fallout 4 mod Fallout- London will be out tomorrow, ‘Unless nuclear war happens’

Late in 2022, the mod team behind Fallout: London uploaded some songs from their in-game radio station to YouTube, including one called I Just Can’t Wait (For Tomorrow). When the team’s project manager, Prilladog, reposted that song in the Fallout: London Discord server’s announcements channel, fans quickly realized what was up.

The mod team has since confirmed to Inverse that July 25 will indeed be the release date, ‘Unless nuclear war happens’.

Fallout: London will give us an unofficial look at what somewhere outside the USA might look like in the post-apocalypse, with a London full of factions like the aristocratic Gentry and their army of Tommies, the Arthurian cosplayers who call themselves Camelot, and the Fifth Column, who are just a wee bit fascist. There are also smaller gangs like the Isle of Dogs Syndicate, the Vagabonds, the Beefeaters, and various squads of skinheads and other oiks.

Fallout: London will be fully compatible with the GOG version of Fal…
